Strategic Prevention Solutions team members Wendi Siebold and Brittany Murrell traveled to Kenai, Alaska, in January 2020 to participate in the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Gathering. The gathering provided an opportunity for CDVSA-funded prevention grantees representing domestic violence and sexual assault prevention programs across the state to connect, train, and innovate.
In partnership with the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, SPS delivered prevention and evaluation workshops. Those activities highlighted the importance of comprehensive services, sufficient dosage, and systematic evaluation to determine whether a program or strategy works. Prevention staff found connection and shared meaning in their implementation experiences and adaptability. Several highlighted their positive community relationships, expansion into media messaging, and utilization of evaluation.
The work of prevention can be challenging, but through collaboration the successes are multiplied.
"Travel in Alaska is inevitably an adventure and often provides unique opportunities. This also was the case with the Prevention Gathering. Grantees traveled to Kenai from all over the state. When flights were canceled out of Anchorage, in true Alaskan style, a group of stranded attendees rallied and agreed to find a way to join up with their peers. With determination, a plan and a few mini vans, we were off. The impromptu drive resulted in gorgeous views of the landscape and provided lots of time to connect and laugh with one another. I greatly enjoyed the company and was inspired by the phenomenal people doing this work. Another Alaskan adventure for the memory books." – Brittany Murrell
